What is Das Boot? Is it a German Movie or a Beer Glass?

What is Das Boot? Is it a German movie about a submarine during WWII or is a beer glass? The answer is yes, on both counts. The term Das Boot now famous from two movies – Das Boot but Wolfgang Petersen in 1981 and BeerFest by Broken Lizard in 2006. BeerFest used the term Das Boot to portray a large boot shaped beer glass used in this beer-themed comedy set in Germany and USA.

The original film Das Boot was based on a novel aptly called DAS BOOT by Hans-Joachim Krug who was a former first officer on a German U-Boat. Das Boot is pronounced as das bo:t in German and was borrowed in BeerFest perhaps as nod to the film. Das Boot is a tale of a German submarine in World War Two that is on a mission to sink allied ships. The film depicts in livid detail the condition on the submarine and difficulties of way.

Das Boot in BeerFest is nothing more than a bierstiefel or beer boot. The beer glasses have been used for long time in Germany, mostly by military personnel and tourists. The glass boots are typically large and made from either pressed or mouth blown glass. Sizes range from .25 liters up to 3 liters. The Das Boot glass used in BeerFest was most likely a blown 2 liter beer boot from the glassworks company Rastal. Prior to being featured in BeerFest, bierstiefel (or beer boots) were collected by tourists and military personnel that either visited or were stationed in Germany. This kitsch item quickly grew in popularity as college students embraced the movie BeerFest.
